Send and Receive SMS

  • SMS, the short message service (SMS), enables you to send and receive text messages of up to 160 characters each (Latin) or 70 characters (Cyrillic) on your GSM mobile phone.

  • SMS service is available to GSM subscribers only, contract subscribers and SIM-SIM prepaid service users.

  • A SIM-SIM user can send an SMS if there are sufficient funds on account. Otherwise, the service suspends until the next account replenishment.

  • You will receive SMS messages even when your mobile phone is switched off; you just retrieve them as soon as you switch it back on. The messages are stored for 3 days.

  • There is no need to read the messages right away: all mobile handsets have enough memory to store 10-15 message for you to read whenever you have time.

Using SMS

  • The SMS service is automatically activated for all new UMC subscribers at the time of subscription to the GSM network. If the SMS service is not activated on your mobile phone, subscribe to the service by calling the UMC Contact Centre on 111 (24 hours a day).

  • To start using the SMS service:
    • Set the number of "the service centre" (SMS centre) on your mobile phone to +38 050 000501;
    • Read Short Messages Service chapter in the user's manual of your mobile phone.

  • Sending a message, always dial the addressee's phone number in the international format:
  • + 380 <code of GSM network> <phone number>
  • For example, in order to send a SMS to any subscriber within the UMC network, dial:
    + 380 50 ÕÕÕ ÕÕ ÕÕ, where:
    • “+” - international access codes used in GSM mobile phones;
    • “380” - international code of Ukraine;
    • “50” - code of the UMC network;
    • “ÕÕÕ ÕÕ ÕÕ” - phone number of the recepient.

  • For further information about SMS service facilities look up the Guide to SMS Service.

Sending SMS Abroad

  • To send SMS abroad on GSM network press “+” and subscriber's number in international format: +

  • For example, +420 73 ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ, where:
    • 420 - Czech Republic;
    • 73 - T-Mobile network code;
    • ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ - addressee's number.

  • Attention! The SMS communication with China Mobile is being maintained through CITIC. Hence the following is peculiar to SMS connections to this operator:
    • When sending an SMS to a China Mobile user, you get a sending report immediately, even if the addressee have not received the SMS yet;
    • your number will be displayed to a China Mobile addressee as “00380 50 ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ”. He or she can use both the above format or international “+380 50 ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ” in order to send you an SMS.
