What is GPRS
  • GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is the technology of the speed package radio transmission in the GSM network.

GPRS Benefits:

    • High average data transmission is 20-40 Kb per second;
    • GPRS service rates do not depend on how lengthy the connection was;
    • Speedy and stable GPRS connection;
    • Option to talk over the phone and exchange SMS messages with no need to disconnect GPRS;
    • Efficient use of the power of your phone during the GPRS connection.

Specifics of GPRS

    • When using GPRS data is formed into packets transformed in parallel by a group of radio channels; radio channels may be used consequently by a group of users;
    • Voice calls enjoy the higher priority than the GRPS connection, therefore the transmission of data packets may occur only when radio channels are free from voice calls;
    • GPRS is adjustable with all most common protocols of the packet data transfer (TCP/IP, X.25 etc);
    • The speed of transfer of packet data depends on:
      • The channel encoding scheme implemented in GPRS network (the UMC network applies the CS2 encoding scheme that ensures the speed of up to 13.4 Kb per second per radio channel);
      • The amount of radio channels on receipt and transfer of data that can be simultaneously support the phone;
      • How the network is busy where the data is transmitted;
      • Quality of network where the data is transmitted.

GPRS-Equipment

  • To start using the GPRS services, you are required to hold a mobile phone supporting GPRS.
  • Ìîbile phones with the GPRS support are grouped into three classes:
    • À Class Phones – voice call and data transfer may be performed simultaneously;
    • B Class Phones – voice call and data transfer may not be performed simultaneously (during a voice call or SMS message the transfer of data packets is suspended to continue as the call ends or SMS message is received);
    • C Class phones – phones support the transfer of data packets only.
