Guide to SMS
- Today SMS services substantially extended and allow you not only to send and get shortened SMS messages from/to GSM standard phone but also efficiently use SMS using Internet.
- To send SMS messages, you need to enter UMC Messaging Center's number at +38050000501 to store it in your phone memory.

SMS Messaging Phone-to-Phone
- SMS phone-to-phone messaging is the easiest way to use the service: open the menu section: "Messages" and then – "Send SMS". Enter your message and subscriber's phone number in international format:
- + 380 < GSM network operator code>.
- For example, to send SMS to a subscriber of UMC network, press: + 380 50 ÕÕÕ ÕÕ ÕÕ, where:
- + Indicator used in GSM standard phones in exchange for the international access from any country;
- 380 – international code of Ukraine;
- 50 – code of UMC network;
- ÕÕÕ ÕÕ ÕÕ – subscriber's phone number.
SMS Messaging Abroad
- To send SMS to a subscriber of foreign GSM network operator, enter + and subscriber’s phone number in international format:
- + < country code > < network code >< phone number >.
- For example, +420 73 ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ, where:
- 420 – international code of Czech Republic;
- 73 – code of T-Mobile operator;
- ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ – subscriber's phone number.
- Attention! As China Mobile requested to channel SMS exchange via CITIC transit operator, the SMS exchange will be outlined in the following format:
- When sending SMS to a China Mobile subscriber you get immediately a report on message delivery even if the subscriber's phone is switched off and SMS has not arrived yet;
- When a China Mobile subscriber gets your message, your number is shown in the format 00380 50 ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ, however if a subscriber is located within China, he/she may send SMS back to your number in the above format or in international standard +380 50 ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ.
SMS from phone to email
- To send SMS message from your GSM-phone to electronic mail:
- at the beginning of SMS message, enter an email address in a standard form: name@domain. If there is no symbol @ on the screen of your phone handset, use the following symbols instead: ? or &;
- then enter a COMPULSORY word space to separate e-mail address from the message text;
- not mandatory: enter the Subject by separating it at the beginning and at the end of the message by "!";
- write a short message and sign it;
- send an SMS message at 1010 number.
- Example of SMS-message:
- Fr³end@yahoo.com !vstrecha! vstret³ms³a segodn³a v 7-00. Olga.
SMS from e-ma³l to phone
- To email SMS messages to an email subscriber of UMC GSM-standard network:
- Enter the recipient's number in
- National format 8 050 ÕÕÕ ÕÕÕÕ, or
- International +38 050 ÕÕÕ ÕÕÕÕ (desirably);
- Add the following address to the email address: @sms.umc.com.ua;
For example: e-ma³l address of a recipient who holds a phone number starting from, 050 310-ÕÕÕÕ, will be as follows +38050310ÕÕÕÕ@sms.umc.com.ua;
- Type in the Subject, message text and send it similarly to sending a regular email address.
- To send an SMS message to a GSM network subscriber domestically or internationally, add address of email gateway of SMS center of the cellular operator (where recipient is subscribed) to the subscriber's number in international format.
- Attention! Not every operator offers support to its subscribers in receiving SMS messages sent from email address. For more details contact your operator on availability of such option from a sender and email gateway of SMS center.
For instance: e-ma³l address of a subscriber in Austria subscribed to Mobikom operator and holding a mobile phone number 43 664 521-ÕÕÕÕ, may be presented in the following format +43664521ÕÕÕÕ@sms.mobikom.at.
SMS from Internet to phone
- Send SMS to a UMC subscriber or subscribers of other GSM operators in Ukraine. UMC subscribers may enjoy this service at no charge!
- Online users may also sent SMS messages from http://www.sim-sim.ua.
Receiving SMS messages from Internet in Russian
- If your handset offers option of Russian or Ukrainian languages, and you are wishing to get SMS-messages from Internet in Russian and Ukrainian, send an SMS message containing any text from your phone at 10108.
- Following your inquiry all SMS messages from Internet written in Russian and Ukrainian, will be delivered at your address in the language of the original message.
- To reject the service, send again an SMS-message containing any text from your phone at 10108.
SMS-Transliteration
- Sending SMS messages to email address, you may use transliteration.
- While transmitting SMS message, at your request, all English letters will be automatically changed for Russian or Ukrainian.
- To transmit messages in:
- Russian, send it at 10101;
- Ukrainian, send it at 10102;
- English, send it at 10103.
- SMS transliteration corresponds to transliteration chart.
Banning SMS Transliteration
- If a text of your SMS contains a word that should not be transliterated, this word needs to be separated on two sides by #.
- For example, to send a message in Russian, you are required:
- Enter:
fr³end@hotma³l.com Vstrecha v 7-00 v #McDonalds#. ²gor'
- And send the message at 10101.
- A recipient will get a transliterated message in Russian:
Âñòðå÷à â 7-00 â McDonalds. Èãîðü.
E-mail Address Book for SMS Delivery
- Enter an email address you use most frequently for sending SMS-messages, into an email address book stored in SMS format.
- Now you have no need to enter e-mail address every time you send an SMS. You may enter up to 10 email addresses to your email address book.
- To record e-mail addresses into email address book:
- Type in a short message (email address) to be included into email address book;
- Send an SMS at 101050N, where N means the number selected for an email address to be entered into the email address book (digits from 0 to 9). The record of a new email address with identical sequence order will lead to erasure of a previously recorded email address.
- To check the email address recorded previously:
- Send an SMS message with any text at 101060N, where N means a sequence order of the email address recorded in the email address book.
- To transmit a message to an email address:
- Enter a short message, without specifying an email address;
- Send an SMS message at 1010Ñ0N, where:
- Ñ means a transliteration code, and - N is a sequence order of the email address recorded in the email address book.
- Example:
- To enter an e-mail into an address book:
- Type in an email address in the text of your SMS message: Fr³end@hotma³l.com;
- Send an SMS message at 1010500.
- Å-ma³l address will be added to the email address book under number ''0''.
- To transmit messages to this recipient:
- Enter the message text: Vstrecha v 7-00. ²gor'
- Send SMS at 1010100.
How to hide phone number by sending/receiving SMS or using nickname
- All your SMS forwarded at e-mail address should be signed as ÕÕÕÕÕÕÕ@sms.umc.com.ua where ÕÕÕ ÕÕÕÕ is the number of your mobile phone.
- To hide your phone mobile number, incorporate your nickname to email address book under the special number 00.
- Now your nickname will be used by the system instead of your phone number for transmission of your email letters.
- Moreover, you may use messages at:
- New email address nickname@sms.umc.com.ua, or at
- Previous address 310ÕÕÕÕ@sms.umc.com.ua.
- Example: A subscribed phone holder 310 ÕÕÕÕ recorded into his email address book under 00 nickame n³ck. Now the system will forward messages by naming the author as n³ck@sms.umc.com.ua.
- So, the record of your nickname under 00 allows:
- Hiding phone number during email transmission, and
- Share a new address with partners hiding a number of your mobile phone.
Information on Billing Status for GSM Contract Subscribers
- If you failed to pay your current bill or have a current debt using SMS you may get bill notifications:
- UMC ACCOUNT UAH XXXX UAH. – the amount of your current debt is UAH ÕÕÕÕ;
- PAY UMC ACCOUNT – you have not paid the bill for the previous month.
